CSI Brough Memorial Church Welcomes You…
This memorable church, “C S I Brough Memorial Church” is situated in Brough Road in P.S. Park Circle Erode. It is named after Rev. Antony.Watson Brough, an Australian Missionary, (1861 -1936) who served the Lord by uplifting the poor and downtrodden in and around Erode. He established many churches, hospitals and educational institutions. He was a light to lighten the poor, illiterates, sick and the needy. “Verily I say unto you, in as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me“ (Mathew 25:40)
The historians say that all together he established 94 schools and 2 hospitals in Erode and its peripherals. The present CSI Hospital, immediately next to the Church, was established by Rev Brough and it was then called as “Ghosh Hospital” which benefited most of the Muslim community. He also set up one hospital in Chennimalai in memory of his son who died in World War I, the historians say. Also it is said that he concentrated his missionary work in Kanjikoil area particularly among the dalits. He has also served as Inspector of Schools. Historians add that Rev. Brough had a distinction of being a nominated member of the then Erode Municipality. During the end of 19th century he left for New South Wales in Australia to spend the evening of his life.
Historians further say that considering the contribution of Rev. Brough to the society, particularly to Muslim women, the Brough Church has “ Ya Kudhah “ inscribed at the entrance.
